Preston Grasshoppers survived a late scare to secure a brilliant victory over Sandal to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Despite winning their first four matches of the season, Sandal have struggled for consistency since, and it was again evident in the first half against Hoppers as the home side dominated possession and took an early 6-0 lead with two penalties by Sean Taylor.
Sandal halved the deficit with a penalty of their own from captain Greg Wood, but it was to little avail as Christian Taylor touched down after sprinting 40 yards to give the home side a commanding 13-3 lead at the break.
A second try from Taylor minutes into the second half opened up a 15 point advantage, and Hoppers were cruising towards victory until the fightback began. Wood firstly kicked another penalty, before James Heron and Luke Norbury both touched down to level the game at 18-all with ten minutes to play.
The momentum was now surely with Sandal in pushing for the win, but all their hard work in mounting the comeback was undone as John Mackenzie restored Hoppers’ lead with a late try which was converted, and this time the home side held on.
Hoppers leapfrogged Tynedale in the National League Two North table with the 25-18 victory, and also moved four points clear of Huddersfield in the final relegation place after they lost at Sale.
Harrogate are now the next opponents who stand in the way of Hoppers making it a sensational three wins in a row, and the sides meet at Rudding Lane on 28th November.
