Tim Haley

Managing Director

Tim established this successful practice in 1994. Never one to let the grass grow under his feet, Tim is renowned for his energy and enthusiasm. Tim’s passion is to help business owners build great companies. Nothing gives him more satisfaction than seeing his clients realise greater value in their businesses. Tim does not see his clients as balance sheets but as real people growing their businesses and achieving commercial and personal success.

Did you know?

Although Tim has a large family, he has been allowed to pursue a very long and inglorious rugby career which is now drawing to a close. Golf and cycling avenues are being pursued with various degrees of success. Tim recently survived a cycling tour to the Isle of Man with 21 other rugby mates which involved a lot of refreshments!

Michael Lucas

Director

Michael has over 30 years’ experience working in the accountancy profession in Preston, Chorley and the Fylde coast. His work has involved providing commercial and practical tax and financial solutions to clients in many different industries and situations. His golden rule is “the tax tail mustn’t wag the dog”. Michael advises on all aspects of tax but particularly on remuneration, capital gains tax and inheritance tax planning including the use of trusts.

Did you know?

Outside the office, most of Michael’s spare time is spent on the tennis court at Broughton. To celebrate his 50th birthday he spent a day at Wimbledon which included playing a match on one of the hallowed courts. His very first shot was an ace – something even Roger Federer probably didn’t achieve! His other sporting passion is Wigan Athletic.

Louise Gorrell

Director

Louise is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants having qualified as a Management Accountant 16 years ago. A highly valued senior member of haley’s professional team Louise has over 20 years' experience in the manufacturing industry.  During her career she has held a number of senior positions including Finance Manager, Project Accountant and Finance Director giving her a wealth of experience to assist haley’s diverse client list. Heading up haley’s internal accounts and one off projects is Louise’s chief responsibility.

Did you know?

Louise is also a busy mum, but still finds time to bring in home baked goodies to share with the rest of the team… her mince pies at Christmas are fought over! She occasionally joins her friends on strenuous walks in the Lake District and when she is not doing that she is keeping fit with Pilates. Oh and she is an active member of the school PTFA!

S. John Fisher

Sales and Marketing Director

John joined haleys in September 2017 as Sales and Marketing Director after 34 years in estate agency.  John was the MD of Bairstow Eves North West and Sales Director of Entwistle Green and is now applying his vast experience to promote the reputation and services that haleys can offer clients to improve their businesses.

John sees that traditional accountancy is in free fall decline and that real time interface and forward advice to clients plus regular contact is the basis of a successful professional relationship.

Did You Know?

John's passion is rugby having won a rugby blue at Oxford and played for Sale FC; he is an active social member of Preston Grasshoppers RFC.  He is also a Governor of Rossall School and enjoys living in the Ribble Valley and holidaying in the French wine growing Languedoc region.

Phil Hartley

Tax Manager

Phil joined the team in 2016 as Tax Manager. A Chartered Accountant member of the ICAEW, Phil is also in the process of qualifying with the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Phil has wide experience working with a range of clients throughout the North West and advises on all aspects of tax and in particular Corporation Tax and Income Tax planning.

Did you know?

Outside the office, Phil’s spare time is spent with his young family and keeping them entertained. He also enjoys playing golf and has travelled to various destinations to play including Portugal and California. His other passion is supporting Preston North End.

Martin Cuerden

Client Manager

Martin joined the haleys team in 2008 after spending two years at Runshaw College in Leyland. He has since successfully undertaken both the AAT and ICAEW qualifications. Martin works predominately on the production of management information to enable business owners to facilitate effective decision making and monitoring of business objectives.

Did you know?

Martin is a keen amateur sportsman and spends much of his weekends attempting  to play cricket for White Coppice CC. During the winter months he can be found on the terraces at Deepdale.

Jayne Thomas

Client Manager

Jayne joined haleys in 2002 with extensive knowledge of the construction industry in which she worked as an accountant. Jayne heads up haleys' construction industry services department a role which is key to ensuring the smooth work flow in the accounts department. To ensure we are always totally up to date Jayne’s department is fully equipped with the latest bespoke software relevant to the construction industry.

Did you know?

Jayne loves to watch sport – any sport – and we have heard that she is quite competitive on the bowling green! That determined streak came in useful when she completed a thirteen mile ‘moonlight walk’ in aid of charity in 2008.

Jimmy Moore

Jimmy joined the haley’s team as Business Services Manager in May 2017.  He has worked in practice for over seven years gaining AAT and ACA qualifications.

Did you know?

Before becoming a chartered accountant Jimmy was a professional rugby player having a career spanning eight years playing for teams including Sale Sharks and Cornish Pirates before retiring due to injury.

Nilla Karlsen-Davies

R&D Technical Analyst

Nilla joined the team in November 2017 as an R&D Technical Analyst after submitting her PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Lancaster University. Her research focused on factors affecting the performance and reliability of regenerative pumps. She has an MEng in Sustainable Engineering and has previously been involved in several R&D projects, both as a student and as an assistant lecturer, collaborating with SMEs on renewable energy technologies, sustainability and energy efficiency. Nilla is also working part-time at the University of Central Lancashire to promote and enable innovation in low carbon technologies in Cumbria. She was recently made a member of the Fluid Machinery Committee of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Did you know?

Nilla is passionate about the environment, loves to spend time outdoors and travel to new and exciting places. Despite living in the UK for nearly a decade she still hasn’t become an avid “normal” tea drinker but true to her Norwegian roots she always starts her day with a black coffee, even if she’s hiking the Grand Canyon!

Gus Glover

R&D Technical Analyst

Gus joined the haleys team in November 2017 as an R&D Technical Analyst.  Gus has studied at university not once but four times now. His latest qualification is an M.Sc. in Waste and Resource Management. He believes that the control of resources is key to sustainable development and economic activity must not irreparably degrade or destroy natural and human resources. He has extensive and wide-ranging knowledge around manufacturing and has a passion for most things mechanical. In the last six years he has been involved in various research projects at the University of Central Lancashire. Prior experience also includes 9 years in contaminated land assessment, 12 years in ICI’s paints research division and a period working for Rolls Royce.

Did you Know?

He is another one of haley’s band of ex rugby players. His only real honour was playing 47 seasons until the ripe old age of 58. He has a 2nd Dan in Judo and has taught English in Japan. The thing he is most asked about in conversation is the 4 years he spent as a butler and confidante to a titled lady.

Claire Mellor

R&D Technical Analyst

Claire joined the haleys team in November 2017 as an R&D Technical Analyst. Claire holds a PhD, MRes and BSc in the area of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, which she gained from the University of Liverpool working within the Medical Research Centre (MRC). Her research interests involve in vitro, computational and environmental toxicology. Claire has been involved on a range of Europe-wide projects, and is experienced with working with an international network of collaborators, from a wide range of disciplines, to complete deliverables required for EU projects. Claire is currently a lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire where she teaches in the areas of Biology, Toxicology and Environmental sciences.

Did you know?

When Claire is not working most of her spare time is taken up on her young family and her two dogs. Claire also loves to read and enjoys watching formula one.

Dave Wright

Consultant

Dave brings an enormous amount of experience to haleys after a long and accomplished career with BAE where he was a senior manufacturing director.

Just some of his skills include strategic planning and implementation of manufacturing processes in a high technological industry; quality control assessment and the integration of service providers in achieving a project goal.  Dave also has an in-depth knowledge and experience of introducing lean manufacturing and he is an excellent negotiator and consultant to many businesses with a keen eye for coaching and developing work colleagues at all levels.  Dave will give added value to our SME clients and will enhance our R&D division.

Did you know?

Dave used to play squash to a high level for Preston Grasshoppers which included him attending many tours in The Low Countries.  In later life Dave has developed a passion for shooting.

Jim Baker

Business Development Manager

Jim Baker is the firm's business development manager promoting value added services. With a sales, marketing and business development background in both corporate and professional sectors, Jim has a wealth of experience in customer/client care.

In his free time Jim likes to relax with his family, listen to live music and enjoys good food and wine. Jim also enjoys tinkering with his modified car and is currently building a track day car for his son to race.

Martin Walker-Smith

Customer Services Co-ordinator

Martin joined the haley’s team in August 2017, as Customer Services Co-Ordinator. Previously, Martin was a Commercial Banking Relationship Manager, based in Preston, looking after a portfolio of 50 commercial clients, helping them achieve their business growth ambitions. Martin worked in banking for just over 40 years and passed a Charter Banking Degree in Lending Skills at the ripe old age of 56!

Did you know?

Martin is keen on football, and cricket, and supports Preston North End. He enjoys walking, and has a great interest in Classic Cars. Sadly, Martin currently owns a Vauxhall Astra!!

Phil Entwistle

Client Services Co-Ordinator

Phil joined the Haley’s team in November 2017, as Customer Services Co-ordinator. Previously Phil was a Corporate Relationship Director in Lancashire, managing a portfolio of 150 clients and assisting them to achieve their goals. Phil has over 35 years in banking experience initially with Barclays and more recently Santander.

Did you know?

Phil is a lapsed Blackburn Rovers supporter who enjoys watching football and cricket, in addition to spending time with his Grandchildren and walking. Phil is also Trustee Chairman of a local charity which supports adults with disabilities to lead as full a life as possible.

Sue Smith

Client Manager

Sue’s role is as client manager working with construction industry clients within our busy outsourcing department. With over 20 years’ experience in construction industry finance, Sue previously worked as the Senior Finance Assistant for one of the largest timber frame companies in the UK, which was a subsidiary of a large quoted plc.

Sue spends her spare time with her two horses Charm and Sasha. Whenever possible, she likes to compete them in dressage.

Joanna Ramsdale

Tax Senior

Joanna joined the team at haleys in 2011 and is a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians. Joanna currently works with the Business Services team, as payroll manager and assisting with book keeping. She also manages business development, marketing and delivering the Growth Accelerator services to clients.

Joanna loves shopping, eating out, travelling and socialising. She is very proud of her large collection of shoes and handbags as well as the many stamps in her passport.

Helen Higgins

Payroll Administrator

Helen joined haleys in 2016, having previously gained over 14 years' experience processing monthly and weekly payrolls for both large and small companies.

Helen's expertise in payroll ensures a professional and friendly service is provided to all her clients.

Did you know?

Helen is a mad animal lover and has 2 cats and a retired guide dog, called Ritzie. She did voluntary work with guide dogs for the blind for 4 years.

Helen and her daughters are mad Disney fans and are looking forward to their third visit to Disney World in Florida.

Carla Waters

Carla joined the team in November 2017 having gained almost 18 years experience working in accounts departments for mainly limited companies.  Carla qualified as a chartered accountant in December 2010 and now has the title of FCCA.

Alex Manfrin

Business Services

Alex joined the team at Haleys at the start of 2014 as an AAT trainee after completing her mathematics, law and psychology A levels at Runshaw College. Alex works within the business services team with the production of year end accounts, management accounts and tax returns. She is studying at Runshaw College towards her AAT qualification.

Did you know?

Outside the office Alex enjoys travelling and she has recently enjoyed trips to Rome, Cyprus and Barcelona. It is her dream to one day visit Australia to experience the culture as well as catch up with friends who have relocated.

Becky Lambert

Business Services

Becky joined the haley’s team in June 2015 after completing her AAT qualification at a national firm within the accounting profession. Becky works within the business services team producing year end accounts, management accounts and quarterly VAT returns. Becky will be going onto study the ACA qualification.

Did you know?

Becky spends her spare time training at her local kickboxing club and has just recently qualified for her black belt 1st Dan. Along with training, Becky loves to get out in the countryside walking her little Border Terrier Millie.

Alex Walmsley

Business Services Team Member

Alex joined the team at the end of 2016 as a trainee accountant after completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics at the University of Sheffield. He works within the business services team producing year-end accounts, management accounts and tax returns.  He also assists with R&D claims. In January Alex will be starting the CFAB qualification ahead of commencing the ACA qualification.

Did you know?

In 2015 Alex completed the National Three Peaks Challenge and is currently training for next April’s Sheffield half marathon. His main sporting interest is football and he’s an avid Manchester United fan.

Ellen Unsworth

Marketing Assistant

Ellen joined haleys in November 2017 as our Marketing Assistant. She is currently in her final year at the University of Central Lancashire completing a BA (Hons) degree in Digital Marketing. Previously she has worked with a corporate goods company by increasing their online presence and re-designing their website.

Did you know?

Ellen is very creative, she runs two blogs, one for photography and one as an insight into university life. She also enjoys baking and has created her own recipe for a none-bake triple chocolate cheese cake, along with a nut-free lemon cheese cake.

Joanne Fellows

Joanne joined haleys at the beginning of October 2016 to provide PA and business support to the team.  She has over 20 years experience of providing PA support within law firms mainly based in Manchester.  She also diversified for approximately 4 years as a director and full time employee of a scuba diving centre based in Cheadle, Manchester.

Did you know?

Joanne is a fully qualified PADI scuba diving instructor and has had the opportunity to travel to Egypt, South Africa and Malta to experience some of the world’s most beautiful dive sites.
